Two female sibling full-term newborns developed respiratory distress shortly after birth, which progressed to respiratory failure. Tracheal lavage demonstrated presence of surfactant protein A (SP-A), but little surfactant protein B (SP-B), without aberrant surfactant protein C (SP-C).
