Nucleotide sequence data from the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among the major groups of didelphimorph and paucituberculatan marsupials from South America, the microbiotheriid Dromiciops gliroides, and representatives of four orders of Australasian marsupials.
