Hepatitis C is the commonest form of chronic viral hepatitis in most western countries. A significant proportion of patients develop cirrhosis, hepatic failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. The results of controlled trials have shown that interferon alpha is an effective treatment for hepatitis C.
