Yersinia pestis, which causes bubonic and pneumonic plague, forms pigmented red colonies on Congo red (CR) dye agar. The hmsHFRS genes required for CR binding (Crb(+)) are genetically linked to virulence-associated genes encoding a siderophore uptake system.
