Mutant strains of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides, lacking either LH1, the RC or PufX, were analysed by mild detergent fractionation of the cores. This reveals a hierarchy of binding of PufX in the order RC:LH1 > LH1 > RC.
