Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent endopeptidases which catalyse degradation of diverse substrates in the extracellular matrix. The family can be loosely divided into 4 subgroups, i.e., interstitial collagenases, gelatinases, stromelysins and membrane-type MMPs.
