Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) adhere to epithelial cells in microcolonies, a pattern termed localized adherence (LA). LA is dependent upon the presence of 50-70 MDa plasmids, termed EPEC adherence factor (EAF) plasmids.
