Patients with the Hb beta + [IVS 1-5 (G-->C)] clinically presented as beta-thalassaemia intermedia and remained asymptomatic in the absence of blood transfusions. With or without blood transfusions the patients were short and had moderate to marked thalassaemia facies. Children who received blood transfusions showed progressive iron loading with age.
