Proline prototrophy was restored to an Escherichia coli proBA proline auxotroph by ornithine and a mothbean (Vigna aconitifolia) cDNA expression library. This novel strategy, "trans-complementation," allowed isolation of a cDNA encoding ornithine delta-aminotransferase (delta-OAT).
