Ustilago maydis is a plant pathogenic Basidiomycete fungus that exhibits dimorphism--it has a haploid, yeast-like phase and a dikaryotic, filamentous phase that is pathogenic. Establishment and maintenance of these two forms are controlled by two mating type loci, a and b.
