Alveolar macrophages (AM) play a regulatory role in asthma. AM from asthmatics are activated, release increased amounts of cytokines, and express higher levels of the low affinity receptor for IgE (Fc epsilon RIIb/CD23b) and receptors for adhesion molecules.
