Air pollution is particularly harmful to people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Exposure to air pollution from sources such as biomass burning leads to a unique COPD phenotype. This phenotype mainly shows airway damage, with less emphysema than typical smoking-related phenotypes.
