Schistosomes are parasitic trematode worms of the genus Schistosoma, responsible for causing urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis. Six primary species infect humans: S. mansoni, S. japonicum, S. mekongi, S. intercalatum, S. guineensis, and S. haematobium.
