BACKGROUND: The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is transmitted by mosquitoes and circulates in Asia, the western Pacific, and other parts of the world. It is classified into five genotypes (GI-GV) based on the nucleotide sequence of the envelope (E) gene.
