The CYP2C19 enzyme metabolizes clopidogrel, a prodrug, to its active form. Approximately 30% of individuals inherit a loss-of-function (LoF) polymorphism in the CYP2C19 gene, leading to reduced formation of the active clopidogrel metabolite.
