BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The discovery of acquired genetic alterations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene involved in growth factor receptor signaling, has changed the way these cancers are diagnosed and treated.
