In human cells, ATP is generated using oxidative phosphorylation machinery, which is inoperable without proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The DNA polymerase gamma (Polγ) repairs and replicates the multicopy mtDNA genome in concert with additional factors.
