Zoonotic cestodes of the genus Echinococcus show marked differences in their distribution patterns which have not been satisfactorily explained. Echinococcus multilocularis is limited to the Holarctic, whereas species in the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex mostly have a worldwide distribution.
