Acinetobacter baumannii is a successful nosocomial pathogen due to its genomic plasticity. Homologous recombination allows genetic exchange and allelic variation among different clonal lineages and is one of the mechanisms associated with horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of resistance determinants.
