KEY MESSAGE: HvMKK3 alleles are temperature sensitive and are major contributors to environmental stability of preharvest sprouting in barley. Preharvest sprouting (PHS) can severely damage barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) malting quality, but PHS resistance is often negatively correlated with malting quality.
