Autophagy is a highly conserved lysosomal degradation pathway responsible for rapid elimination of unwanted cytoplasmic materials in response to stressful conditions. This cytoprotective function is essential for maintenance of cellular homeostasis and is mediated by conserved autophagy-related genes (ATG) and autophagic receptors.
