Indigenous soybean rhizobial strains were isolated from root nodules sampled from farmers' fields in Mozambique to determine their identity, distribution and symbiotic relationships. Plant infection assays revealed variable nodulation and symbiotic effectiveness among the 43 bacterial isolates tested.
