Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is characterized by uncontrolled complement activation leading to thrombotic microangiopathy and severe end-organ damage. The most common trigger for an episode of aHUS in the background of genetic deregulation of the alternative complement pathway is systemic infection.
