Lysosomal acid lipase hydrolyzes cholesteryl esters and triglycerides contained in low density lipoprotein. Patients who are homozygous or compound heterozygous for mutations in the lysosomal acid lipase gene (LIPA), and have some residual enzymatic activity, have cholesteryl ester storage disease.
