The formation of normal starch granules in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) leaf chloroplasts requires STARCH SYNTHASE 4 (SS4). In plants lacking SS4, chloroplasts typically produce only one round granule rather than multiple lenticular granules.
