During oxygenic photosynthesis, the reducing power generated by light energy conversion is mainly used to reduce carbon dioxide. In bacteria and archae, flavodiiron (Flv) proteins catalyze O2 or NO reduction, thus protecting cells against oxidative or nitrosative stress.
