Shiga toxin-encoding Escherichia coli (STEC) regroup strains that carry genes encoding Shiga toxin (Stx). Among intestinal pathogenic E. coli, enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) constitute the major subgroup of virulent STEC.
