Evidence for a heritable predisposition to rotator cuff tears (RCTs) is growing. Unrelated Caucasian individuals with surgically diagnosed full thickness RCTs (cases) and elderly Caucasian controls with intact rotator cuffs were screened for differences at the candidate genes: TNC, Col5A1, TIMP-1, MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, and MMP-13.
