Mutations in exon 12 of the nucleophosmin (NPM1) gene (NPMc+ (NPM1 COOH terminal mutations)) define a distinct subset of acute myelogenous leukemias (AMLs), in which the NPMc+ protein localizes aberrantly to the leukemic cell cytoplasm.
