Astaxanthin is a xanthophill pigment with commercial application in the aquaculture, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. The red yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous is one of the most promising microorganisms for its industrial production. However, astaxanthin content in wild yeast strains is low.
