The ascomycete fungus Fusarium fujikuroi is a model system in the investigation of the biosynthesis of some secondary metabolites, such as gibberellins, bikaverin, and carotenoids. Carotenoid-overproducing mutants, generically called carS, are easily obtained in this fungus by standard mutagenesis procedures.
