Abdominal segmentation of the Drosophila embryo requires the activities of the gap genes Krüppel (Kr), knirps (kni), and tailless (tll). They control the expression of the pair-rule gene hairy (h) by activating or repressing independent cis-acting units that generate individual stripes.
