Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of homocysteine to methionine, and folic acid is an essential cofactor. Mutations in the MTHFR gene lead to hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular thrombosis.
