The fhuE gene of Escherichia coli codes for an outer-membrane receptor protein required for the uptake of iron(III) via coprogen, ferrioxamine B and rhodotorulic acid. The amino acid sequence, deduced from the nucleotide sequence, consisted of 729 residues.
