Catabolite repression of the Bacillus subtilis alpha-amylase gene (amyE) involves an operator sequence located just downstream of the promoter (amyR), overlapping the transcription start site. Oligonucleotide site-directed mutagenesis of this sequence identified bases required for catabolite repression.
