Direct‐to‐consumer genetic testing and population genome research projects challenge traditional notions of privacy and consent that were originally developed for clinical research. Bartha Maria Knoppers analyses the implications and proposes new approaches to govern both population‐based genome research and commercial direct‐to‐consumer genetic tests.
