A novel hypothesis of carcinogenesis, the "fetal cell carcinogenesis" hypothesis, was established based on molecular evidence of thyroid carcinoma. In this hypothesis, cancer cells are derived directly from the remnants of fetal cells, instead of well-differentiated somatic cells by de-differentiation.
