A bacterium which utilizes 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) as a sole source of carbon and energy was isolated from soil. The bacterium, designated strain GP1, was identified as an Azotobacter sp. TCP was the only chlorinated phenol which supported the growth of the bacterium. Resting cells transformed monochlorophenols, 2,6-dichlorophenol, and 2,3,6-trichlorophenol.
