BACKGROUND: Sitosterolaemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by elevated plasma levels of plant sterols and cholesterol. Sitosterolaemia is caused by gene mutations in either of two ATP-binding cassette (ABC) half transporters, ABCG5 and ABCG8.
