After folding, many proteins must assemble into oligomeric complexes to become biologically active. Here we describe the role of RbcX as an assembly chaperone of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), the enzyme responsible for the fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
