X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a severe neurodegenerative disorder. ALD is characterized by progressive demyelination within the central and peripheral nervous system, adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) and accumulation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) in plasma, fibroblasts and tissues.
