We investigated a family manifesting progressive ataxia, with expanded SCA8 CTA/CTG repeats. Neuropathologically, degeneration of Purkinje, inferior olivary, and nigral neurons and periaqueductal gliosis were evident. The sites of Purkinje cell loss were occupied by fibrillary accumulations.
