Virtually all human cells incorporate aquaporins, or water channel proteins, into their cell membrane. Indeed, many cells produce several aquaporins, each adapted for a specific physiologic function. Thus, it is not surprising that aquaporin malfunctions are associated with numerous important clinical conditions.
