BACKGROUND: Pelizaeus-Merzbacher-like disease (PMLD) is an inherited hypomyelinating leukoencephalopathy with onset in early infancy. Like Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), PMLD is characterized clinically by nystagmus, cerebellar ataxia, and spasticity, due to a permanent lack of myelin deposition in the brain.
