An S-layer (surface regular array) was found in the cell wall from six out of ten strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus examined by electron microscopic observations. All of the six strains which were shown to carry the S-layers belonged to the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) homology group A, but not to B, which had been classified by Johnson et al (Int. J. Syst.
