It was thought that delta-aminolevulinate synthase (ALAS) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway. Actually there are two isozymes of ALAS and ALAS2 (erythroid delta-aminolevulinate synthase), they play the leading role in the hemoglobin biosynthetic pathway.
