The mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) syndrome is characterized by the association of gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms. It is a rare autosomal recessive mitochondrial disorder with multiple mitochondrial DNA deletions and/or depletion.
