We disrupted the rtxC gene on the chromosome of Bradyrhizobium elkanii USDA94 by insertion of a nonpolar aph cartridge. The rtxC mutant, designated DeltartxC, produced serinol and dihydrorhizobitoxine but no rhizobitoxine, both in culture and in planta.
