OBJECTIVE: The hyperimmunoglobulinemia D and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS; MIM 260920) is caused by recessive mutations in the mevalonate kinase gene (MVK), which encodes an enzyme involved in cholesterol and nonsterol isoprenoid biosynthesis.
