The unicellular cyanobacterium, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is motile. A homologue of the PilT protein family, required for twitching motility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and social gliding motility in Myxococcus xanthus, was found to be necessarily associated with cyanobacterial motility.
